April showers bring May flowers, along with humidity that often gets up to 90% in Florida! Many of our clients who have issues with moisture damage to their wood floors do not know that humidity fluctuation is often the #1 contributor.

Luckily, there are simple solutions to maintaining proper humidity levels in a home. Homeowners and installers must recognize that the wood moisture content of the flooring should be measured and monitored before, throughout and after the installation process. Rather than being reactive in fixing the floors once they a have experienced damage, it is better to take a proactive, preventative approach.

Just a few days of exposure to high humidity can cause wood flooring to warp and cup. “Cupping” occurs when the edges of a board raise up higher than its center. Excessive humidity tends to be the primary reason for cupping, but it can also occur from water spills that have absorbed into the wood.

By taking precautionary measures and asking the right questions, a situation that is frustrating for both consumers and installers can be prevented.

  • Clean wood floors with a lightly dampened cloth, following the manufacturer’s directions for use.

  • Never allow indoor humidity to rise above 65%.

  • Purchase a care kit for your floor recommended by your retailer or floor installer.

  • Avoid damp mopping wood floors to prevent the destruction of the wood.

  • It is recommended to clean your wood floors with water or water-based products only when necessary and clean only the soiled areas.

  • Clean up water spills immediately after they occur.

  • Keep your air conditioner or dehumidifier running in hot and humid weather to maintain optimal humidity levels.

  • To prevent cupping, keep indoor humidity level within the 40-60% range in your home during floor installation.
