The new year brings with it all sorts of possibilities. And, sure, you could create some resolutions for the new year. You might even be successful at achieving them – providing you put forth the time and effort needed. But resolutions imply that perhaps you have things you need to work on to improve yourself and come with a sense of failure if not accomplished. 

So, how should you start the new year if you don’t want to make resolutions?

You may want to set some intentions for 2021. Intentions are great because you know that you are already “enough.” Yet, you are doing things that are good for you mentally, physically, or emotionally – without the pressure of failing.

  1. Strengthen Your Relationships

Every relationship is different. You might have relationships with a spouse, children, family, and friends. And each of them requires something a little bit different to keep them strong and healthy. While you may think that you are in a good place with the important people in your life, spend some time in 2021 strengthening your relationships to be the best they can be.

  1. Read More Books

Books can bring so much to your life. They can be an escape. They can be inspirational. They can provide advice and guidance. They can spark creativity. They can lead you down the road to success. Spend some time in 2021 reading. You may be surprised by how much joy this pastime brings you.

  1. Create More Time for Yourself

Do you often feel like there are just not enough hours in your day? Do you wish you had a few extra minutes just to sit and rest, let alone get to the daily chores and tasks on your to-do list? Then make 2021 the year where you create more time for yourself.

  1. Express Your Gratitude

2020 was, to say the least, an interesting year, and it may have left you feeling not so grateful – even if there were plenty of things in your life that you were grateful for. 

Let 2021 be the year where you express your gratitude. Are you thankful for your clients at work? Let them know. Grateful for your friends and family? Tell them you are – and tell them why. You might find that expressing gratitude becomes contagious – and what a good thing for all!

You don’t have to set huge goals for activity and exercise in 2021 to be a success. You could set the intention for yourself to move more. Maybe that means an extra walk or two each week. Or a morning yoga session to start your day. Or an evening ride on that Peloton bike you purchased. Aim to get your body moving!

  1. Learn Something New

Did you know that learning something new is one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy, active, and engaged? It is! So, why not learn something new this year? It could be a hobby, or a foreign language, or how to cook Thai food. Find something that interests you – and learn!

  1. Volunteer

2020 was a difficult year for many, and 2021 may continue to be so for some. If you have it in you, find the time to volunteer for a group or organization that you believe in. Volunteering can be very fulfilling on a personal level, and you will do an immeasurable amount of good for the group where you focus your efforts.
