We all want our homes to be clean and sparkling, but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. And even more challenging? Breaking bad habits that keep us from achieving this goal! But it doesn’t have to be that way. These bad cleaning habits can be broken – and a clean home can be yours!

Overdoing It With the Cleaning Products

If a little is good, then more has to be better, right? Not so fast! One of the most common bad cleaning habits is using too many cleaning products. This can not only be costly, but it can decrease the effectiveness of the products you’re using. When you use too many different products, they can actually cancel each other out and leave your home dirtier than when you started! Instead of filling your cupboards with every cleaning product under the sun, stick to a few simple, multi-purpose products that will get the job done.

Letting Dishes Sit in the Sink

Who hasn’t left dishes in the sink with the intention of getting to them later? We’re probably all guilty of this bad habit. But this not only creates a messy kitchen, it can also attract pests. If you have a dishwasher, make sure to load it up as soon as possible so that your dirty dishes don’t pile up. And if you don’t have a dishwasher, be sure to wash your dishes right away so they don’t attract pests and leave your kitchen looking messy.

Not Dusting Regularly

Dust collects on surfaces fairly quickly, so it’s important to dust regularly if you want to keep your home clean. Unfortunately, many people forget or simply don’t bother to dust on a regular basis. As a result, their homes become covered in a layer of dust that is difficult to remove – especially around baseboards. To avoid this, make a schedule and commit to dusting your home once a week. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes!

Not Putting Things Away

With work and kids and other activities taking up your time, it’s easy for things to pile up around your home – leading to the dreaded “C” word – clutter!  And a cluttered home is not only unsightly, but it can also be dangerous. If you’re constantly tripping over toys or stepping on loose papers, it’s time to break the habit of leaving things out and start putting them away. Dedicate some time each day to decluttering your space and keeping things tidy. And if childrens’ toys are a problem – get the kids involved in the pickup process! Your home will thank you for it! Just a few simple baskets or even a hamper in designated areas can make it easy.

Using Dirty Tools to Clean

When was the last time you emptied your vacuum canister or changed your sponge? Another bad cleaning habit that’s all too common is using dirty tools to clean. Whether it’s a mop head that hasn’t been changed in months or a sponge that’s covered in grime, using dirty tools to clean will only make your home dirtier. Make sure you’re using clean, fresh materials every time you start a cleaning project. And don’t forget to disinfect those tools when you’re done!

Not Reading the Directions

We’ve all been there – we start cleaning something and then realize that the product we’re using doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. When this happens, not reading the directions on your cleaning products can actually do more harm than good. If you don’t know how to use a product properly, you could end up damaging whatever you’re cleaning. So before you start spraying and scrubbing, take a few minutes to read the label and make sure you’re using the product correctly.
