Taking care of your emotional, mental, and physical health is what self-care is all about. But you’re busy, and you probably put your own needs last and spend lots of time tending to those around you.
This year, make it a point to put yourself and your needs first. Don’t think of taking care of yourself as something you do when you have time, but think of it as a necessity. Because when you are well-cared for, you can take great care of those you love, too.
Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas of self-care that you’ll love!
Get Good Sleep
A good night’s rest is essential for EVERYTHING. Without good sleep, you can wake up feeling tired, cranky, and definitely not ready for what comes your way. If sleep is what you need, Healthline has “17 Proven Tips to Sleep Better at Night” that might be useful.
Exercise
Regular exercise has many benefits. It not only helps you stay physically fit, but it helps elevate your mood, keeps your thinking skills sharp, improves your sleep, and much more. And it doesn’t take much of it to reap the benefits. Find an activity you like – such as yoga or walking – and incorporate it into your schedule.
Spend Some Time Alone
If you feel you’re constantly being pulled in different directions, you may long for some time alone. And spending time with yourself is good for you. Don’t be afraid to put it on your calendar or wake up a few minutes early each morning to have that alone time.
Outsource Things That Drain Your Energy
Then there are those things that drain your energy, such as housework, running errands, and prepping dinner. The good thing is – those things can be outsourced. Yes, hiring someone to do the things you don’t want to do or have time to do is a form of self-care. (Mini Maid would be happy to help you take cleaning off of your to-do list!)
Eat Well
The old saying, “You are what you eat,” may not be that far from the truth. If you find that you’re not fueling your body with nutritious foods, you’re definitely not going to feel your best. Take the time to look at your diet and see where you might tweak or improve upon it in order to take better care of yourself.
Say No When Needed
Are you constantly being asked to do things or help out or contribute in some way, shape, or form? It can certainly be draining on your time and energy. So, now may be the time to start saying “No” when needed. Do it without guilt, and know that you are doing what you need to do to take care of yourself.
Get Organized
Did you know that being disorganized can leave you feeling stressed out? It’s true. Spending some time getting organized can be a form of self-care – and you’re bound to see lots of benefits when you’re done.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Yes, time spent outdoors can boost your mood and make you feel better. Take some time each day to get outside. Perhaps it’s 10 minutes at lunch or a quick walk with the dog after work, but breathe in some fresh air and enjoy your time outdoors.
Do What You Enjoy
What do you like to do in your free time? Read? Spend time with family? Watch a good movie? Bake cookies? Crochet? No matter what it is – spend more time doing it! Doing what you enjoy is definitely self-care!
Self-care isn’t selfish. Self-care is necessary. And when you start using some of these ideas to bring more of it into your life, you’re going to love the way you feel – emotionally, mentally, and physically.
