Summer is the time for fun, but it’s also important to take some precautions to stay safe. Whether you’re heading to the beach, going on a road trip, or just staying home, here are some summer safety tips that will help to keep you safe, so you have an enjoyable summer!

Sunburn and Sun Poisoning

Wear sunscreen! It’s crucial to wear sunscreen year-round, but especially in the summer when the sun is strongest. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and make sure to reapply every couple of hours, even if you’re not swimming. If you do get a sunburn, treat it immediately by applying aloe vera or a cool compress. And if you start to experience symptoms like headache, nausea, or dizziness after being in the sun, seek medical attention right away as it could be a sign of sun poisoning.

Dehydration

Staying hydrated is key to staying healthy in summer. When it’s hot outside, your body perspires more and loses fluids. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks like sodas and juices, which can actually make you more dehydrated. And if you’re going to be spending time outdoors, pack some extra water and snacks in a cooler.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a serious condition that can occur when your body temperature gets too high. Symptoms include headache, nausea, confusion, and dizziness. If you or someone you’re with starts to experience these symptoms, move to a cool place immediately and call 911.

Barbecuing

Barbecuing is a summer staple, but it’s important to do it safely. Make sure your grill is clean before you use it, and never leave it unattended when it’s lit. And be careful of flare-ups – if the flames get too high, move your food to a cooler area of the grill or turn off the gas.

Bug Bites

Summertime means more time outdoors, which also means more bug bites. To avoid getting bitten, wear light-colored clothing, use insect repellent, and avoid being outdoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. If you do get bitten, treat the bite with a cool compress or hydrocortisone cream to reduce swelling and itchiness.

Boating

If you’re heading out on the water this summer, make sure to follow some basic safety rules. Wear a life jacket, even if you know how to swim. Avoid drinking alcohol while boating. And be sure to take a boater’s safety course before hitting the open water.

Pool

Swimming is a great way to cool off in summer, but it’s essential to be safe around water. Never swim alone, and make sure there is someone who knows CPR nearby. Also, avoid diving into shallow water to prevent serious injuries.

Beach

The beach is a great summer destination, but there are some safety considerations to keep in mind. Swim only at lifeguard-protected beaches and never swim alone. Be aware of rip currents and always obey the flags. And be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and water.

Road trips

Summer is the perfect time for a road trip! Before you hit the road, make sure your car is in good working order. Check the oil level and tire pressure, and fill up the gas tank. Plan your route ahead of time and take breaks every couple of hours to stretch your legs and give your eyes a break from the road. And most importantly, don’t drive tired!

Bicycling

If you’re going to be biking this summer, be sure to wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road. Ride in the same direction as traffic and use hand signals when turning. And be extra careful at intersections, where most bike accidents occur.

Hurricanes

Florida is prone to hurricanes, so make sure you have a hurricane plan in place. Know evacuation routes and where you would go if you had to evacuate your home. Stock up on supplies like non-perishable food, water, and batteries. And keep an eye on the weather forecast so you know when a storm is headed your way.
